Rely on Old Masters Topcoat
Applying a selected topcoat is the best way to generate long-lasting, durable protection for your adored woodwork. Using a clear topcoat finish should help keep your work safe from marring, chipping, surface abrasions and wear and tear from water spots. UV shelter is supplied in our exterior finishes. These finishes help keep your merchandise safe from water, Nature Herself, the wind and all of the weather.
Be sure to choose the right topcoat as each clear finish is exclusively formulated. For furniture items and antiques, Gel Polyurethane is a sensible option, although, this would not be suitable for flooring. Explore and read the product labels to ensure that you select the proper finish. Check out Old Masters’ clear finish collection guide to help you decide on the perfect topcoat for your application.
Protect the stability of your interior and exterior wood projects with suitable surface protection. Corrosion is a common concept with Mother Nature. The standard recommendation is to reapply outdoor exterior clear coats every second year; however, items including fences or furniture which are continually in the sunshine may need to be recoated every year.
Protect With a Topcoat
A protective, clear topcoat is important for keeping your wood staining and finishing products secure.
Be certain that the location is well ventilated. Eliminate any dust or debris from the object by using a clean rag. Thoroughly stir the product before and during the application process but Do Not Shake. Items that require multiple containers should be combined and mixed ahead of time to produce a uniform gloss. Try the finish on a undetectable surface location in advance to check for satisfactory adhesion. Take care not to apply in sunny or windy settings. Don’t depend on tack rags if you are applying water-based, clear finishes.
Take these steps into account when applying a clear finish to properly prepared wood:
1. Invest in a 2” or 2.5” China bristle brush to apply your clear finish.
2. Avoid creating bubbles by applying in even, light coats. Follow the direction of the grain with minimal brushing to protect yourself from a sheer finish Avoid thick coats as this can cause wrinkles and drips upon drying.
3. Permit the finish to dry extensively. Each product is different so check the label for drying times. The time varies depending on the type of finish you are using.
4. Lightly sand with 220 grit sandpaper in between coats. This can help the finish adhere better and produces a nicer result. Allow extra drying time in case the sandpaper becomes gummy. Take sanding debris away for a crystal clear finish.
5. Reapply product and read label instructions regarding recoating times. A two-coat minimum is typically suitable for interior finishing. Usually, 3 coats are suggested for exterior project protection. Each product has exclusive instructions and detailed label information.
6. Let the product rest for 24 hours at least before subjecting surfaces to minimal use. Take additional care the first week after application to allow the solution to cure to its hardest ability. Mark off floorboard applications from heavy traffic. Give it at least three days or 72 hours after the last coat to put furniture back in place. Never push the furniture when shifting it. Let the floors cure for at least a week before cleaning them or putting rugs down.
Helpful, Handy Hints
If any lint catches into your finish, use a firm-bristle artists’ brush to take it off before the product completely dries.
Ensure your work space is free from dust prior to finishing to help keep the finish spot-free. Avoid using solvent-based finishes in areas that don’t have suitable ventilation as they are full of harmful vapours.
